Back to School Learn Something New Through Constant Learning

Back to School Learn Something New Through Constant LearningBack to School Learn Something New Through Constant Learning2The back to school season causes me to wonder if because so many of us have obtained degrees and certificates, or even specific job training that we believe our role as a student has come to a close. Despite the fact that specific training is beneficial, I question whether this long held notion is no longer relevant. Instead, I believe that in these fast paced, ever evolving economic and global markets, that a habit of lifelong, constant learning is, in fact, a mora sensible path to take.A Constant learner is not necessarily one who studies traditional subject specific topics, but rather someone who integrates learning into all aspects of their life, exploring and testing new ideas and methods. The idea behind this is to stay open to, and practice, new ideas in order to enhance your current career or aid in discovering a new one.A Constant Learner is one who will g o above and beyond to use the skills acquired in everyday life to try and find meaning in any given task, often putting in 15-25% more effort than others to get the results he or she wants. A Constant Learner realizes the expansive and unexplored wealth of information to acquire in this life. A student attracted to this method of learning explores beyond conventional curriculum, marked by the creativity and perseverance to explore the alternate path with little signs that their chosen path is the correct one.Below are several ways to integrate this method of constant learning into your life1. Participate in a book clubThere is much to be gained from joining a book club, but at the very least you will open yourself up to books you would otherwise not have been exposed to, and you will experience socializing and becoming comfortable with sharing your opinion with a new group of people.2. Find a new way to exerciseBreak out of your normal routine by exploring new activities such as fen cing to raffinesse your precision, balance and control skills or yoga to calm and quiet the mind or even horseback riding lessons to control a being five times your size with a single nudge.3. Try a new art mediumTry your hand at metal-smithing for the balance of first destroying and then creating something beautiful out of a plain sheet of metal.4. Learn a new languageYou may not have an ear for accents, but there is a lot to appreciate about a new language, and perhaps your love for grammar and syntax, and for reading literature in its native tongue, is enough to coax you.5. Take a cooking class.By immersing yourself in cooking you will find that there is more to it than meets the eye baking is chemistry and cooking takes intuition6. Refine your office skillsBy mastering your PowerPoint or excel skills, you will become familiar with moving beyond your comfort zone, allowing yourself to be more open to new experiences and to continue to grow as a person.7. Take a new classNew class es bring about fresh insights. Dabble in psychology or history classes, and be sure to take something you never had the chance to take in college. You will discover there is always something new to learn when you open your mind to both refreshing, and learning new skills. When you invest in your future, you will find a new passion for life. You will standout to hiring managers as a candidate who is open minded, takes initiative for his or her happiness, and can apply this newfound knowledge to the professional realm.Have you applied any of these constant learning concepts to your life? If so, let us knowOur thanks to Glassdoor for the guest blog post. Glassdoor is your free inside look at jobs and companies. Tips for Networking at Holiday Parties

Tips for Networking at Holiday PartiesTips for Networking at Holiday PartiesThe holiday season provides a perfect opportunity for job search networking. Even if youre out of work and fresh out of holiday cheer, its important not to miss out on any opportunities to meet people who can help you find a job. The holidays, contrary to what you might expect, can actually be a good time to job search. Accept all the invitations you receive and consider the networking youre going to do to be a key part of your job search. Even if you dont feel like going to a party or other holiday celebration, youll meet people there who not only can help you- inspired by the holiday spirit, they will likely be eager to offer their knowledge or assistance. You might even have much more fun than you expected Keep in mind, however, that in choosing to use holiday social events as opportunities for job networking, you will need to act as professionally as you would at a career conference or an actual interview . Tempted as you might be to let loose during a holiday party, youll need to rein in any sort of merrymaking- such as drinking too much or acting or dressing inappropriately- that would make someone question your potential as a mature and responsible employee. Holiday Party Networking Tips Phil Haynes, Managing Director of AllianceQ, a group of Fortune 500 companies and many small and medium-sized companies that have collaborated to create a schwimmbecken of job candidates, shares his tips for holiday networking at parties, so you can get the most out of the events you attend. Dont turn down invites to holiday parties. The more contacts you make, the better, even if contact is minimal. You never know who youll meet, and the goal is to have a contact who remembers who you are and what you do. The more contacts you meet, the greater your chances of finding someone who can help you to find promising new job opportunities.Everyone you meet could be a potential lead, so introduce you rself well. Practice and perfect the art of introducing yourself clearly and simply. Figuring out your introductory sound bite (similar to an elevator pitch) is worth it. It gets that conversational ball rolling Ask for advice. While its not really appropriate to ask for a job at a holiday party, speak the language. Use phrases such as Im interested in learning more about or I respect your opinion and would welcome your advice about this career or job. People are more receptive to being a resource than a means to an endTake notes about the people you meet. After any holiday party, jot down on theirbusiness cardsor on a contact info card what they do, a topic you discussed, or a common interest to jog your memory. This can be helpful for use in future contacts. Listen. Your contacts can provide valuable information and insight if you arent too busy doing all the talkingBe natural and conversational. Try to establish a sense of rapport. Mention something or someone you have in common . Ask simple questions to engage in general conversation. Above all, try to avoid sounding like you are reading from a script.Follow up. Ask for business cards from each new person you meet and then follow up with them through an email, letter, or telephone call, referencing something specific from your conversation. Other Holiday Networking Opportunities Seasonal parties are not the only venues that can provide promising opportunities for job searching. Community organizations such as local food banks, schools, arts groups, or national non-profits like the Arthritis Foundation or Toys for Tots are often desperate for volunteers to ensure that their holiday fund-raising events are successful. Not only can volunteering help to keep you busy and allow you to maintain a positive focus during a season of joblessness, but it also allows you to meet and network with new contacts who might know about a great job for you. And, while helping others is a wonderful way to raise your own s pirits, in a best-case scenario, your volunteer position might even turn into a full-time job.

Heres why someone fell asleep during your big presentation

Here's why someone fell asleep during your big presentation Here's why someone fell asleep during your big presentation Big presentations can be daunting. Even after weeks of preparation, it’s common to find yourself fighting off nerves, stumbling through slides, and clawing for the right words. Here are potential reasons why your words weren’t resonating with everyone while at the podium. You sounded too much like a salesperson - they stopped paying attentionTalk to your audience, not at them.Author, strategic advisor, and speaker Ian Altman writes in Inc. about “selling too much” during a presentation.“You might be given the stage to address the audience at a conference. This can be a disaster. You might consider pitching the audience on your product/service. Don’t do it!” he writes.“Instead, share stories of challenges you’ve helped others overcome. Make the customer the hero, not your company. You want the audience to think, ‘I have a similar challenge, and I would love to have the same outcome as that person in the story.’ … Stories engage. Selling from the stage is a direc t path to the vortex of evil,” he continues. You gave them too much time to twiddle their thumbsGet prepared beforehand so you don’t have to waste time - in an working world with too many meetings, you’ll need to make every minute count.Bernard Marr, an author, keynote speaker, business, technology and data expert, writes on LinkedIn that “technical difficulties” can be an issue during a presentation.“There’s nothing worse than sitting around and waiting for a presenter to figure out how to make the projector work - or worse, listening to a presentation without slides because he couldn’t make it work,” he writes. “Be prepared to connect to anything; a few dollars spent up front to buy all the right connectors will save you tons of embarrassment and headache. Know beforehand the kind of projector, the size of the screen, and the layout of the room so you can be prepared for anything.”Your slides were too denseLoad up on these, and your audience will be out like a light.Debbie Fay, founder of public speaking coaching, presentation development company bespeak presentation solutions, llc, writes in Forbes about how “creating visuals that aren’t aids” is a problem.“[Y]ou should never show slides, or overheads, or flip charts that are text intensive. Period,” she writes. “Your visual aids should always be something that says what you (with words) cannot. Get it? We’re talking charts, graphs, pictures, cartoons, music. Any visual aid you create should act as a synergistic component; it should illuminate in ways that are beyond you and your words.”Think of it this way: the less text, the better.Your words were going over their headAuthor Nancy Duarte writes in the Harvard Business Review that “speaking in jargon” is a common presentation error. This post was the last one in a series featuring information from her book the HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations.“Have you ever listened to a presenter who sounded super-smart wi thout having any idea what she really said? If so, the presentation was probably full of jargon. Each field has its own lexicon that’s familiar to experts but foreign to everyone else. Unless you’re speaking to a group of people who are steeped in the material themselves, you’re better off avoiding highly technical or industry-specific language. Use words that will resonate with those whose support and influence you must earn. If they can’t follow your ideas, they won’t adopt them. Consider whether your presentation passes the ‘grandmother test’: If your grandmother wouldn’t understand what on earth you’re talking about, rework your message,” she writes. The person was actually exhaustedGetting four hours of sleep + a long presentation = zzzzzzz.Let’s not forget about this one - no matter what, don’t give them a reason to rest up during your presentation.

4 Smart Things to Do During a Company Crisis - The Muse

4 Smart Things to Do During a Company Crisis - The Muse 4 Smart Things to Do During a Company Crisis Do you ever wonder what it would be like if your CEO’s name was splashed across news headlines- in a bad way? Or if your company went through a merger or massive layoffs? Or if suddenly your entire organization’s budget was slashed in half? When your company enters crisis mode, it’s certainly scary- and it can often feel like you only have two options: Wait it out and suffer the long-term career consequences of being associated with an organization known for its failures Jump ship and face job uncertainty in the short-term But a meltdown at your office doesn’t have to mean a career crisis for you. In fact, you can actually learn and gain a lot from a chaotic situation. I’ve had repeated brushes with corporate turmoil during my career. The first time came in my mid-20s, soon after I moved from New York to Minneapolis for my dream job. My company merged with another, larger one, putting a lot of our jobs at risk. But my boss recognized that disruption meant we had a whole new set of needs, and surprisingly, she nominated me for the transition team. It was grueling work for sure, but it gave me a seat at the table as the new enterprise took shape. I worked closely with the chief strategist, soaking up on-the-job training and trying to make myself valuable. This experience not only strengthened my resume, but set a long-term course for my career in strategy and facilitation. In the end, my supervisor even rewarded my hard work by creating a position for me at the new company. And in my work today as a management consultant helping organizations face tough times, one interesting thing I’ve noticed is that it’s not just the boss who can come out of a crisis more polished. I’ve seen how even employees without fancy titles can rise into leadership and find their moment to shine. Here’s how you can step up to support the business and grow your career when all hope seems lost- even if you’re not the boss (yet). 1. Personify Steadiness and Adaptability The fact is, during panic moments, leaders don’t always have all the answers. So they scan to find people who can rise to the challenge- and too often they discover few of their employees are ready. (How could they be? Everyone was focused on their day job, not preparing for potential disaster.) That’s why steady and adaptable people stand out. Your cachet rises as you demonstrate your ability to change rapidly and adjust to new circumstances. I was in middle management at a growing telecom company when my next corporate crisis hit. One day we were laying fiber optic cable, the next we were bankrupt. On the afternoon of the announcement, I watched one supervisor fold under the uncertainty. He left the building without giving notice, never to return. His employees, however, quickly picked up the slack. Within a few short weeks, they were among an elite group recognized for their steady presence and can-do attitude. Don’t be one of those people who, when a crisis hits, gets emotional, thinks negatively, or tries to keep doing things the old way, convinced it’ll work out in the end. Rather, take this opportunity to think creatively and be open to altering your approach. 2. Take Initiative People who get noticed and rewarded during crises don’t wait around to be told what to do. When everything is uncertain, it’s up to you to find ways to contribute to the bottom line and support your colleagues, your customers, and the company- and make things better. Plus, when your boss is swamped with new responsibilities and feeling a little desperate, they’re more likely to take a chance and let you try your hand at new things. You could take one of the following steps (without overstepping your boundaries, of course): Suggest hosting a brainstorming session with your team to improve output, workflow, or anything else you think could use a refresher. Even if the company as a whole is struggling, your team will still run like a well-oiled machine, and look all the better when trouble eventually passes. Chaos introduces a real threat of loss- be it cash, reputation, workforce, customer loyalty, or some other prized asset. So be creative and find ways to stop the hemorrhaging. Can you form or join a team that monitors metrics for customer satisfaction? Can you help design short-term solutions if there’s a dip in success rates? Can you come up with unique strategies to continue to grow the business with limited resources or support? Form a cross-departmental team to resolve day-to-day snags. Disruption introduces a new set of challenges, and long-lasting solutions will hinge on coordination and communication between departments. If you’re not quite ready to lead a new team yourself, consult with your supervisor before pitching the idea to a leader who has the power to initiate it. Be clear that you want to be involved. 3. Reframe the Crisis as an Opportunity Even though crises are messy and intense in the moment, the day will come (as it always does) when you look back on all this and realize how important of an opportunity it was for you and your career. The thing is, you don’t have to wait for hindsight to get here. Be proactive and ask yourself now: What do you want to learn or gain from this? Then, consider how you can position yourself to achieve it. Think about: How close can you get to the center of the action? Who do you want to learn from? Ask and strive to be on teams or attend meetings where people deal with issues that are most urgent or beyond your scope of knowledge. Resist the temptation to keep your head down during chaos. Instead, build new bridges and surround yourself with individuals who can boost you up in some way or another. What skills will help you move up in your field, either to a more senior-level position or a management role? Does this crisis allow you to build and practice them now? Reframing the situation isn’t just productive. Crises offer rare opportunities to strengthen your resume, build confidence, and accumulate memorable stories that’ll wow your audience in future job interviews. 4. Let Curiosity (Not Fear) Drive You It’s normal to worry about how decisions at the top will affect your role- including whether you’ll have a job in the end. You, however, don’t have control over that, so don’t dwell there. Instead of indulging your private fears and worst-case scenarios, become a curious and relentless observer guided by sincere questions- about how you can help the company and what you can glean along the way. For example: Pay attention to uniquely effective leaders. What are they doing? Can you emulate them? Consider whether today’s turmoil exposes facets of the business that you didn’t understand before. Does this new exposure help you round out valuable or essential business acumen? Look around to see which employees appear indispensable. Can you acquire a technical or interpersonal skill to parallel theirs? By taking this approach you’ll calm your nerves. Plus, you’ll cultivate a level of confidence and cool-headedness that only a trial by fire can produce.

Last Minute Spring Cleaning Don#8217;t Forget To Tidy Up Your Resume

Last Minute Spring Cleaning Don#8217;t Forget To Tidy Up Your Resume Last Minute Spring Cleaning Dont Forget To Tidy Up Your Resume According to Behiring’s “Confessions of the Recruitment Industry” infographic, if a recruiter sees one spelling or grammatical error on a resume it will be thrown into the trash. One. And Harris Interactive conducted a study last year of more than 2,000 hiring managers and HR professionals. The study asked them to name the “most common and most outrageous real-life resume mistakes they see.” Most common mistakes  Resumes with typos Candidate has an inappropriate, non-professional-sounding email address Resumes with missing information- no dates of employment, no list of skills Resumes are too generic, not tailored for the position Resumes that copy/paste text from the job ad Resumes printed on decorative paper Resumes that are too long or too short Most outrageous Resume was written entirely in the Star Trek language of Klingon Resume used text-speak the letter u instead of the word you Under objective the candidate wrote To work for someone who is not an alcoholic with three DUIs like my current employer Candidate neglected to include his/her name in the resume Resume included baby pictures of the candidate Resume included jail term served for assaulting former boss While the above “outrageous resume examples” may sound amusing and unbelievable, having your resume rejected because of errors is certainly believable- and missing out on a potential job opportunity is no laughing matter. So, while you’re doing your last minute spring cleaning, don’t forget to tidy up your resume. And to offer a few quick and simple tips to help you do this, Recruiter.com spoke with Karen Ochoa, career development coordinator at Computer Systems Institute. Read on to discover what she had to say about this type of spring cleaning, common resume mistakes and the latest trends in resume writing. Why is the spring season a good time of year for job seekers to clean up their resumes? I believe the spring season is a great time of the year for job seekers to “clean up” their resumes because the summer months are quickly approaching! Which means many employers will be hiring extra help. With high school and college kids being off of school for the summer, there will be direct employment competition. Therefore, start fixing up your resume early- spring time so as to avoid “fighting” for available positions with the masses. What are the most common resume mistakes? The most common mistakes on a resume would be, believe it or not, the small details. Not so much what is on a resume, per say. For example, an extra space where it is not needed, a period after the month, abbreviation in one place and not another. Many employers look at the small details to make sure you actually put time and effort into a resume. If you say you pay attention to detail and then you have a three-letter month abbreviation in one place and a four-letter month abbreviation in another, the employer will wonder how you did not catch the discrepancy. What are the latest trends in resume writing and how can job seekers use them for job hunting success? The latest trends in resume writing would have to be design. If you are a job seeker looking to have your resume stand out amongst the rest, your resume should not be a plain bold name here, or bold title there. Rather, consider using a template that you can purchase online or contacting your alma mater and asking for some templates.   Making your resume stand out from the pack is always beneficial. Now, there are wrong ways and right ways to “stand out”.   Highlight your skills, minimize gaps in employment and wow them with your summary of qualifications.   Remember to ask for a critique of your resume. You very well may miss a detail or a critical spelling error.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. We're SHRM certified. 10 Things You Need to Know to Be A Successful Project Manager

10 Things You Need to Know to Be A Successful Project Manager 10 Things You Need to Know to Be A Successful Project Manager As a project manager , you are going to wear many hats, and be responsible for many different things. You will be overseeing every step of each project that your team is working on, and you need to be able to do it all, and then some. But, it doesn’t have to get crazy, and you can do it, as long as you are properly planning, implementing, and monitoring each project. When you do these three things, you can be sure that your project is going to be completed on time, and within the budget. Today we are going to talk about 10 things that you need to know about successful project management . Your project scope basically describes every detail about the project. Before you can dive into any project, you need to have a very clear project of its scope, in order to be able to get the results you want. You and your team will need to take time before starting each project to gather all of the necessary information, assign tasks to the right people, and know what you have for resources to work with. Once you have all of this in place, you will have a plan that is well thought out and ready to work on. You need to be monitoring every part of the project, every step along the way. This doesn’t mean that you need to breathe down the shoulders of those on your team. But, you do need to keep a close eye on the timeline and where things stand, as well as your resources, to know that you have enough to ensure the project is seen to completion. You should always keep the timeline updated with a project management tool like Paymo , and if there are any unforeseen changes, find ways to get the project back on track. No matter how well you have planned out any project, there are bound to be unexpected problems that crop up along the way. You need to be prepared to always be planning, for just such events. Not all projects are going to be wrought with problems, but there will be some that keep you up all night trying to figure things out. This is something that you just have to expect when you are in project management. Have a contingency plan, and make sure that your team knows what to do when issues crop up. It is important that you get to know your team in order to know each person’s strengths and weaknesses. You need to know how they work, what motivates them, and what it takes for them to accomplish goals and deadlines. You will need to learn how to communicate with your team as a whole, and with each individual on the team. Let them give you feedback and suggestions, and don’t always force them to do things your way. When they have more input and responsibility, they will get the project done. Sometimes your stakeholders are going to want you to make changes in the middle of the project, and this could end up setting you back, even though they still expect everything to be done on time. When this happens, sit down with the stakeholders and explain to them how much certain changes are going to affect not only the timeline, but also the budget and the quality of the work. Often, they will understand when it is explained to them in the right terms, and they will be willing to compromise. It is a good idea to have a few members of your team be a separate risk response team as well. That way, if there are any unforeseen problems, you can feel safe in knowing that there are team members who can easily handle it and keep the project on track. This team should be your first line of defense when there are any problems with any project you are working on. Every step of your project should be placed on a timeline. This is going to help you and your team to stay organized, and know what needs to be done in order to meet all project deadlines. When you have a visual timeline, you have a complete picture of the entire project, as well as your resources, and a good understanding of the various steps that need to be taken to see the project through to completion. This is going to keep you and your team focused on the work at hand. You are not a failure if you need to bring in outside help on projects. Sometimes, there are problems that you and your team need help with, and you should never be afraid to ask for help. A good project manager knows when they are unable to take care of a problem themselves, and that when this happens, they need to find the right people who can help with the problems. It is a good idea to get into the habit of holding weekly meetings . You might even want to have short, daily meetings as well, just to see where things are in the timeline and answer any questions your team may have about certain tasks. Regular meetings will help you to keep the project on track, which is what being a project manager is all about. Don’t forget to inform your clients weekly as to the status of their projects as well, so they are always in the loop. It is not enough to simply complete a project on time and within or under budget. You need to deliver quality work, and the quality should be more important than getting it done on time or saving money (although these are important as well). Ask for feedback on your team’s work, both from your team and from outside sources, to ensure that you are going to be delivering quality work. Don’t forget to keep monitoring the timeline and resources while striving for quality. Jane Hurst is a content manager from San Francisco. She is a business writer and writing coach. Sample Sickness Absence Excuse Letters and Emails

Sample Sickness Absence Excuse Letters and Emails Sample Sickness Absence Excuse Letters and Emails Everyone gets sick now and then. Occasionally, you might even have to miss a day or two of work. When this happens, you need to let your employer know as soon as possible to avoid negative consequences for your job and career. When you miss work because you are sick, you should follow the procedures specified by your manager, or outlined by the human resources department and your employee handbook. Typically, an employer will require you to alert your boss by letter, email, or phone call. Even if it is not required, it is a good idea to tell your boss about your absence as soon as possible. Putting this message into writing (either via letter or email) is often best. Learn how to notify your boss about your absence, and read sample excuse letters and emails. Understand Company Policy and Your Bosss Preferences While your company may have its own policies regarding your sick day, your manager may have a different view. Typically, companies ask employees to alert their manager about a sick day. For extended time off (more than four days) due to sickness, some companies will also require a doctors note. Your boss may have a preference about whether you email or call to inform them that you are taking a sick day. Some managers - and companies - prefer that you send a note about your absence to your team, and not just your direct boss, so that all your colleagues are aware that youre unavailable.   How to Notify Your Boss Whether it is required or not, it’s a good idea to put your sickness absence excuse in writing. That way you have a record of what transpired, and your manager can easily document the absence. If you have to miss work due to a sudden illness, you should make every attempt to notify your supervisor as soon as possible. A quick phone call, text, or email to let them know that you are unable to be at your job that day is an absolute priority. Use whatever method is preferred in your office. When you return to work, you should then provide a formal absence excuse letter or email, along with any supporting documentation (doctor’s note, ER evaluation, etc.). What to Include in the Letter or Email Use business letter format. When writing a letter, follow business letter format. Include your contact information, the date, and the contact information of your employer. Then, begin the content of your letter with an appropriate salutation. Explain why you are writing. Include the reason for your absence, and mention if you have any documentation. Include the date(s) of your absence as well. However, keep this part of your letter brief. You do not need to go into all the details of your symptoms. Be clear but concise. Then, end with a professional closing and your signature. Make sure your email is professional. When writing an email, keep your message just as professional as any business correspondence. You can leave the date and contact information out of the top of the message. Include the same content, but underneath your signature, include your contact information. Include your name in the subject line. Fill in the subject line with your name and your reason for writing. For example, your subject line might simply be “Firstname Lastname â€" Absence.” Proofread your message. Whether you write an email or a letter, be sure to proofread your message. Yes, you are sick, but this is still a professional message. You want your writing to be clear and polished. Examples of Sickness Excuse Emails Here are some sample absence excuse emails to use as a guide for when you miss work due to illness, or if you know you wont be able to come to work on the next day or beyond. Job Opportunities and Careers in the Air Force

Job Opportunities and Careers in the Air Force Job Opportunities and Careers in the Air Force The Air Force has over 150 enlisted jobs. Only three of these jobs (Pararescue, Combat Controller, and Tactical Air Command and Control), are closed to women. The Air Force calls their enlisted jobs Air Force Specialty Codes, or AFSCs. Enlistment Options The Air Force has two enlistment options: Guaranteed Job, and Guaranteed Aptitude Area. Under the Guaranteed Job program, the applicant is guaranteed training in a specific AFSC (Air Force Job). Under the Guaranteed Aptitude program, the applicant is guaranteed that he/she will be selected for a job that falls into one of the designated aptitude areas. The Air Force has divided all of their jobs into four aptitude areas (General, Electronic, Mechanical, and Administrative). The Application Process To provide maximum flexibility for the Air Force to meet their needs, only about 40 percent of all job slots are made available to the Air Force Recruiting Command for guaranteed jobs. The remaining 60 percent are reserved for those enlisting under the Guaranteed Aptitude Area program. The way the process generally works is that applicants travel to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), where they take the ASVAB, undergo a medical examination, and meet with a security clearance specialist, to determine their qualifications. Then the applicant meets with an Air Force Job Counselor  and looks over the jobs that are currently available at that time, that they qualify for (if any). If there are no jobs available that the applicant qualifies for, and/or wants, they make out a list of five or so jobs (including one aptitude area) and are enlisted in the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP). Applicants are then placed on the QWL (Qualified Waiting List), for one of their preferences to become available. This can take several months. Its not uncommon, these days, for an Air Force applicant to remain in the DEP for eight or more months before finally shipping out to basic training. When one of their preferences becomes available (whether it be a specific job or an aptitude area), they are then assigned to that job/aptitude area  and are given their basic training shipping date. If one enlists in the Guaranteed Aptitude Program, they will meet with a job counselor around the 2nd week of basic training. The job counselor will give them a list of all the AVAILABLE jobs that they qualify for (medical, moral history, ASVAB scores). Understand that not all Air Force jobs within the aptitude area will be on the list, only the jobs that have open school seats at that particular point in time. When you receive the list of choices, you have one week to consider it, then you return to the job counselor and give your top 8 choices (from the list). Everyone else in the same week of training, who enlisted in the same aptitude program, will also have a list that looks exactly like yours. They will be making choices, as well. Applicant Ratings The job counselors give each applicant a rating, which is derived from their ASVAB scores, medical qualifications, and moral (criminal/drug history) qualifications. If, for example, there is a job that has five openings and six people put it down as their first choice, they take the five highest rated and give them the slots and the sixth person, they go to their second choice. Of course, that second choice may also be someone elses first choice, which would affect whether or not the person would get the slot, depending on how many are available, and how many placed it high on their list. Individuals who enlist in the Guaranteed Aptitude Program generally find out which job theyve been selected for, around the 7th or 8th week of basic training. Those wishing to enlist in the Air Force must be very flexible when it comes to job assignment. For the past several years (and currently), the Air Force has done exceptionally well in recruiting. In fact, the Air Force has thousands of more volunteers than they have enlistment slots for. Flexibility is Encouraged Air Force recruiters will often refuse to process an applicant who is job locked. In effect, its a waste of time and resources to process an applicant who is determined to be interested in only a couple of job possibilities, when there are hundreds of other qualified applicants, waiting in line behind him/her, who are willing to be more flexible. Some Air Force recruiting squadrons have established a briefing checklist that recruiters must go over with the applicant and have them initial and sign before they go to MEPS that specifically states that they are going to the MEPS to swear into to the Air Force DEP, and not to job shop. If the applicant doesnt agree to this and doesnt sign this briefing checklist, then they dont go to MEPS. Plain and simple. To join the Air Force, one must be flexible with both job selections and dates of availability. The Air Force will at times work someone outside of the job they were trained in. This usually happens when someone does something that results in temporary disqualification from their normal job, or if someone volunteers for a special job or project. For example, in some squadrons, there may be a team of three or four volunteers to form the squadron small computer team. These individuals would be volunteers from within the squadron, to install and maintain small computers or the small computer network within the squadron. Many of the larger Air Force squadrons have such volunteer teams.

A Guide to Vetting Tech Talent Through GitHub and Stack Overflow

A Guide to Vetting Tech Talent Through GitHub and Stack Overflow A Guide to Vetting Tech Talent Through GitHub and Stack Overflow Technical recruiters have a difficult job â€" especially if they dont have those technical skills themselves. Sorting through a pile of resumes or a long list of LinkedIn profiles to find the right developer can  feel like an impossible task. Its not just the jargon, but also the fact that resumes and LinkedIn profiles rarely properly showcase developers true skill sets. Fortunately, technical recruiters can often turn to sites such as Stack Overflow and GitHub  to get a better picture of candidates skill sets in the tech industry. Although developers dont use their public GitHub or Stack Overflow profiles for the express purpose of finding jobs, both profiles allow developers to highlight their technical abilities without having to complete any unnecessary fields like an executive summary or a job-by-job outline of what theyve done, says Rich Moy, developer hiring expert at Stack Overflow. Its All Greek to Me: Parsing Candidates Profiles on GitHub and Stack Overflow Because these sites were not designed to connect recruiters and developers, recruiters may not be quite sure how to read and assess a candidates GitHub or Stack Overflow profile. Heres a quick primer: The first thing a recruiter will probably see on these profiles is a lot of code and technical jargon. Thats not what the recruiter should focus on, according to Moy. Instead, Moy recommends technical recruiters look to the following four areas of a profile to find the information they need on candidates: Top Tags/Badges (Stack Overflow): If these technology tags and their corresponding programming languages match your tech stack, this is a good indication that this person can hit the ground running from day one, Moy says. Reputation Points (Stack Overflow):  When a developers question or answer on Stack Overflow is upvoted by other community members, he or she receives reputation points. A high number of reputation points indicates that a programmers peers have validated and trust their knowledge, Moy says. Forks and Pull Requests (GitHub):  This indicates a developers passion for contributing to the developer community â€" and if your team is collaborative, this is good to know right off the bat. Still, take this with a grain of salt and compare the number of forks and pull requests to that developers overall activity on the site, Moy says. Occasionally, youll find that a programmer has forked â€" or copied â€" a lot of other repositories to inflate their profile. This makes it important for recruiters to look at activity, and not just the total number of repositories on a developers profile. Additional Links:  Developers tend to include links to their personal websites or blogs [on their profiles], Moy says.  Reviewing these is an easy way to find out what theyre working on and care about. That said, a developers code cant be ignored entirely. Rather than trying to interpret it themselves, however, recruiters should partner with their engineering managers to get the job done. Its not the tech recruiters job to evaluate code by his- or herself, and most hiring managers are empathetic to that, Moy says. If youre unsure about a candidate during the resume-review stage, recruiters shouldnt be afraid to ask  [hiring managers or engineers] for additional feedback. Over time, youll start noticing trends about how they evaluate programmers and what theyre looking for. At the same time, its important to maintain that level of rapport with your engineering managers and ask for clarity whenever youre unsure about something that you see on a candidates resume. One other important thing to note is the existence of Stack Overflows developer story feature. This feature allows users to  opt in to hear from employers and recruiters using Stack Overflow to recruit programmers. The stories themselves give recruiters insight into things that matter to the programmer, like particular projects, blog posts, and previous jobs. Behind Closed Doors Coding is a passion for many developers. Thirty-seven percent of developers consider open-source contributions to be an important part of their continuing education, while 81 percent contribute to open-source projects or code as a hobby, according to the 2017 Developer Hiring Landscape  report from Stack Overflow. That said, many developers arent actively involved in public, open-source communities. It would be a shame to miss out on these candidates simply because they arent as active on Stack Overflow or GitHub. Some developers work for government contracts or large, secretive enterprises, and legally cannot share information publicly online, says Moy. Others simply are just not as active as their peers. That doesnt always indicate a lack of passion or talent. In these cases, Moy recommends looking to see if a candidate maintains a personal website where they post code or write about their work or industry. Public GitHub and Stack Overflow profiles are a good way to quickly identify promising candidates, but shouldnt be used as a negative filter to rule out candidates, Moy says. In other words: Just because a candidate isnt on these websites, or their profile is less than thrilling, that doesnt mean they wont be a perfect hire.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. The Ultimate Guide on How to Write a Resume and Get Your Dream Job

The Ultimate Guide on How to Write a Resume and Get Your Dream Job The Ultimate Guide on How to Write a Resume and Get Your Dream Job Are you looking for your dream job but still haven’t had any luck on your side? Maybe your resume needs a little boost! After all, in the hands of a recruiter, your resume is what speaks for you. Do you know how to write a resume and get your dream job? You have to imagine yourself as a product that you wish the recruiter to buy and your resume as an advertisement. Try and put yourself in their shoes. If you were the employer, what would the best candidates resume be like?  Read on and find out how to write a perfect resume to land a perfect job! The Ultimate Guide on How to Write a Resume and Get Your Dream Job First, ask yourself the important questions. And answer them, of course. The most important questions are: What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? And how do these fit (or don’t fit) the job I am planning to apply for? Write these down and stick to them. You should have it cleared up what type of job you are applying for. In other words, what sort of an impression do you want to, or should make on the recruiter? Is it a position where you can go a little crazy and send a creative resume? Or is it a corporate, “white collar” kind of job where is best to stay firmly on the ground? Know everything about the job Collecting as much info about the company and the position as possible is important for you to understand who they are looking for and whether you might be the right candidate for the job. This will also help you to imagine how to write a resume that fits company culture.   Carefully review the job offer and find the keywords. What’s this good for? Many companies get dozens of resumes daily and in order to save time they run all the resumes they get through a keyword identifying system. If a resume doesn’t contain the words the company is looking for, your resume is likely to end up in a trash immediately. Say you’re applying for a position that requires leading a team. Except the obvious keywords TEAM and LEADER, other words associating with this kind of job might be: communication, management, supervise, or people. You have to foresee what skills and experience are relevant and appealing to the person who wants to hire you. In your resume, you have to show that you have the very skills the right man for the job is supposed to have. You can either use the same words as were used in the job offer or find out what are the most common traits desired in the candidate for the position you’re applying for. Don’t use synonyms! If the job requires a particular skill, say, attention to detail, let the recruiter know you are attentive to detail (of course, only in the case you truly are). After all, you want to be the guy they are looking for. Choose a resume format and style Picking the right format and style for your resume depends on two things: what job position you are applying for and what amount of experience you have. This will also help you imagine how to write a resume that fits your needs. There are three basic resume formats: Reverse-Chronological format You can apply this resume format for almost all job positions. In this format, you list your work experience from the most recent ones to the oldest. The reverse-chronological format is great if youre looking for a job in the same field or industry as your previous jobs. This type of resume clearly shows your employment path. This format is also suitable for students or fresh graduates because its perfect for listing your education info. Functional format This resume format works best if youre applying for senior positions. In a functional resume, you list the most relevant skills and knowledge at the beginning, regardless of time frame. Use this format if the job youre applying for requires specific experience, set of skills or if its necessary to write a detailed list of your achievements in your previous job. Also, we recommend using this format if you had several gaps in your employment history or if you were changing jobs too frequently. Combination/Custom format You can also choose to use the combination of the previous two formats. Typically, you would start with listing your specific skills and knowledge (functional format) which will then be followed by a reverse-chronological list of your work experience or education. This format is great for highly experienced job seekers who have loads of knowledge and skills to showcase in one resume. For creative jobs, feel free to use any custom format you like. There are no rules for crazy, creative resumes. Still not sure how to write a resume? Here is a little cheat sheet with 10 quick resume tips: Your resume is not a confessional. Stick to the most relevant and marketable info about you. You can find great resume templates here. 6 seconds rule. On average, your resume will get read (or, rather, run through) in about 6 seconds. Keep this in mind and make sure you can convey the most important info about yourself in this time. Be honest. It is  allowed to embellish a bit but don’t lie because the truth will out! If your only PhotoShop skill is retouching wrinkles or yellow teeth on your holiday photos, you’re not exactly a Photoshop master. Don’t play at something you aren’t. Scrap the useless stuff. If you had  a French class in high school 7 years ago and the only thing you remember is je m’appelle  Nick, you don’t really speak French. And including any language at level A1 on your resume is pretty pointless. Dont describe your previous jobs too eagerly. Dont  turn your work experience into a list of all the things you did there. Rather, state only two or three major duties. Write your achievements and  tasks you were particularly excellent at! Show yourself in the best light. And  we mean literally. If you’re attaching your photograph with your resume, be sure it’s one that does you justice. Pick a photo that’s appropriate to the position you’re applying for. No overjoyed faces, but no criminal stock style photos either! And no selfies! Multiple resumes. When  you’re searching for a job, you’d better create several different resumes, fit to respective job offers or positions. Or if you’re applying for similar positions, you can have just one, but we advise you to customize it for each company and for each position. Keep it simple. Being creative definitely pays off sometimes, but dont overdo it. You dont have to use ten different fonts and fifteen different colors. Online resume builder can help. Dont be a cliché.  Phrases like: Im creative, flexible, communicative, proactive with a can-do attitude are getting a bit old. Dont get too vague. Tell who you really are. Volunteering rocks. If youve ever been a volunteer for a cause you care about, definitely state it on your resume. Recruiters love volunteers! It says youre willing to give your time for no reward which makes you look diligent and a diligent employee means a good employee. + Bonus tip: This ones pretty obvious but we simply cant emphasize it enough:  Double check your grammar and spelling. An error-free resume is a must! + Resume samples:  Still not sure how to write a resume? Check our resume samples helped more than 300K people to get their dream job. Now its your turn!
